William Carter William Carter came to the United States from England in 1857 and built a large knitwear manufacturing company of international repute. He gave generously to the town, donating land for two libraries, two churches and a cricket field, and was one of the first manufacturers to adopt the Saturday half-holiday. During World War II, in 1942, his sons donated his 1910 horseless carriage to the local salvage committee in support of the war effort. |
